1. Pre-Procedure Assessment
Verification of doctor’s prescription
Patient identification and allergy check
Assessment of vital signs (BP, pulse, temperature if required)
Vein assessment for cannulation
Explanation of procedure to patient/caregiver
2. Preparation
Strict hand hygiene and aseptic precautions
Preparation of IV fluids/medications as per prescription
Use of sterile/disposable equipment
Selection and preparation of IV site (antiseptic cleaning)
3. IV Cannulation & Infusion
Insertion of IV cannula (appropriate size)
Securing the cannula with dressing
Setting up IV line and infusion set
Regulation of flow rate as prescribed
Administration of IV fluids/medications safely
4. Monitoring During Infusion
Continuous observation of patient condition
Monitoring for:
Allergic reactions
Pain or swelling at site
IV infiltration or blockage
Adjustment of flow rate if required
5. Post-Procedure Care
Flushing of IV line (if required)
Removal of cannula (if not continuous infusion)
Application of sterile dressing
Ensuring patient comfort
6. Documentation
Recording fluid/medication name, dose, and duration
Time of initiation and completion
Patient response and any complications
7. Biomedical Waste Disposal
Safe disposal of IV sets, needles, and waste
Use of puncture-proof containers as per protocol
8. Patient/Caregiver Education
Instructions on care of IV site
Signs of complications (pain, redness, swelling, fever)
Guidance for follow-up or next infusion
